Haiti vs Scotland

The GrassRank Institute has completed its analysis of the fifth fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the first to be staged at Gillette Stadium and the first World Cup appearance for either nation in this grouping pairing. The Institute notes that Scotland returns to the tournament after an absence it declines to characterise as lengthy, and that Haiti makes its second appearance at any World Cup, fifty-two years after its first. The Institute treats both facts as background, and proceeds to the measurements.

Gillette Stadium is, by the Institute's records, the first venue in this competition to present a pitch laid specifically for football over a surface ordinarily given to gridiron markings. The implications are addressed in Section One.

Section One — Turf Composition Index

Gillette Stadium's World Cup surface is a 365SS Kentucky bluegrass hybrid, reinforced with stitched synthetic fibre at a ratio the Institute assesses as 95 percent natural to 5 percent reinforcement — supplied, as at SoFi Stadium, by Tuckahoe Turf Farms of New Jersey, though laid here at a markedly higher natural proportion. The Institute regards a higher natural percentage as a surface of greater character and correspondingly greater unpredictability underfoot.

New England's early-summer weather pattern has, in the seventy-two hours preceding kickoff, delivered rainfall the Institute's environmental desk classifies as sustained. The Institute assesses the resulting moisture retention coefficient at 0.91, the highest recorded so far in this competition. Scotland's domestic season is played, by the Institute's longstanding classification, on surfaces it terms perpetually damp; Haiti's domestic league, the Ligue Haïtienne, is played on surfaces the Institute classifies as considerably firmer and drier. A coefficient of 0.91 is judged to favour the side with the longer acquaintance with standing water underfoot.

Turf Composition verdict: Scotland advantage. Moisture retention coefficient of 0.91, the tournament's highest to date, favours prior acquaintance with heavy pitches.

Section Two — Kit Chromatography Profile

Scotland's 2026 home shirt presents a deep navy base with white shoulder stripes and cuffs, the crest — a red lion rampant on a yellow shield — set centrally on the chest. Gillette Stadium's pitch, freshly laid and mown for the first time in a football orientation, runs in the Institute's standard linear pattern, re-oriented from the venue's gridiron hash marks. White shoulder stripes set against shoulders and sleeves cut diagonally to that linear grain produce what the Institute terms grain dissonance, and the Institute's spectral desk assigns a coefficient of 1.09.

Haiti's home shirt retains the bicolore's solid blue field, with red trim at the cuffs and a red sash motif at the waist, set against blue shorts and socks. A solid field produces no interaction with the mowing pattern in either direction; the Institute's heraldry desk assigns Haiti's kit a neutral grain coefficient of 1.00, as it did for Paraguay's vertical stripes in Report 004, though for the opposite reason — absence of pattern rather than alignment of pattern.

Kit Chromatography verdict: Scotland advantage. Grain dissonance coefficient of 1.09 against Haiti's pattern-neutral 1.00.

Section Three — Stadium Conditions Matrix

Gillette Stadium sits at approximately 60 metres above sea level, comfortably beneath the Institute's 1,500-metre threshold; no adaptive physiology weighting applies to either squad. The altitude column is closed without comment, as it was for Reports 003 and 004.

Unlike SoFi Stadium, Gillette Stadium is open to the sky, and the Institute's meteorological desk reports that the same sustained rainfall noted in Section One has saturated the surrounding air to a relative humidity the desk records as elevated. The Institute assigns an atmospheric saturation coefficient of 1.06, under which the ball is observed to travel with reduced carry on aerial deliveries and increased true-roll on ground passes. Haiti's build-up play is, by the Institute's archive, conducted predominantly along the ground; Scotland's, by contrast, makes frequent recourse to crossing from wide areas. A coefficient of 1.06 is assessed as favouring the side less reliant on the ball's flight.

Stadium Conditions verdict: Haiti advantage. Altitude neutral; atmospheric saturation coefficient of 1.06 favours ground-based build-up over aerial delivery.

Section Four — Historical Precedent Layer

The Institute's archive records zero prior meetings between Haiti and Scotland at any level, in any competition, on any surface. This is the first instance in five reports in which the Historical Precedent Layer has returned an empty record. The Institute's standing methodology specifies that an empty record receives the null coefficient of 1.00 — a value the Institute notes is, by coincidence, numerically indistinguishable from its coefficient for total certainty, and asks the reader not to dwell on this.

The Institute observes, for completeness, that Haiti's only previous World Cup appearance was in 1974, fifty-two years prior to this fixture, and that Scotland's most recent prior World Cup appearance was in 1998, twenty-eight years prior. Neither figure is assigned a coefficient. Both are filed.

Historical Precedent verdict: neutral. No prior meetings exist; the standard null coefficient of 1.00 applies to both sides equally.

Section Five — National Symbolism Weighting

Scotland's crest presents a red lion rampant on a yellow shield, encircled by eleven green thistles — a design lifted directly from the Royal Banner of Scotland. The lion rampant qualifies, without dispute from the heraldry desk, as an apex predator, and receives the Institute's standard 1.15× predator coefficient.

Haiti's crest presents a shield divided diagonally in red and blue, surmounted by the national coat of arms — a palm tree bearing a Phrygian cap, flanked by a trophy of flags and weapons, on a field of green. The Institute's heraldry desk confirms the absence of any apex predator, classifies the palm tree as flora rather than fauna, and assigns Haiti's crest the neutral baseline of 1.00.

National Symbolism verdict: Scotland advantage. Lion rampant assessed at the standard apex predator coefficient of 1.15× against Haiti's neutral 1.00.

The Institute's multi-parameter analysis returns a directional signal in favour of Scotland across three of the five measured variables, with the Historical Precedent Layer returning, for the first time in this competition, a wholly empty record and a corresponding neutral verdict. The moisture retention coefficient of 0.91 and the lion rampant's apex predator weighting of 1.15× are assessed as the dominant terms, compounding to outweigh the atmospheric saturation coefficient that favours Haiti's ground-based approach.

Haiti's pattern-neutral kit and grounded build-up play are acknowledged as sound on their own terms, and the Institute notes that a record of zero prior meetings cuts in neither direction — though it observes that a side making its first World Cup appearance since 1974 arrives, by definition, without a losing habit to break. The Institute considers this observation interesting, and irrelevant to the coefficients above.
