Ivory Coast vs Ecuador
The GrassRank Institute has completed its analysis of the ninth fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the first to be staged at Lincoln Financial Field and the opening fixture for both nations in Group E. Neither side has previously met the other in any competition, at any level, on any surface — a condition the Institute's Historical Precedent desk has encountered only once before, in Report 005, and addresses below in its proper place.
Lincoln Financial Field's surface was resurfaced and widened to FIFA's required 105 by 68 metres ahead of the tournament, and was exercised across seven Club World Cup fixtures in June 2025. The Institute regards a pitch with a competitive season already behind it as a pitch that has nothing left to prove, and proceeds accordingly.
Section One — Turf Composition Index
The Lincoln Financial Field surface is a HERO Hybrid Grass construction — 95 percent Kentucky bluegrass to 5 percent stitched synthetic fibre, supplied, as at SoFi and Gillette, by Tuckahoe Turf Farms of New Jersey. The Institute notes that three of the tournament's host surfaces now derive from the same New Jersey turf farm, a degree of horticultural concentration the Institute declines to characterise as a monopoly, on the grounds that grass cannot meaningfully restrain trade.
Philadelphia's mid-June climate is forecast by the Institute's meteorological desk as hot and humid, with surface temperatures expected to elevate the bluegrass component toward the upper limit of its comfortable range. The Institute assesses the moisture retention coefficient at 0.84, a moderate-low reading consistent with a surface drying under sustained heat. Ivory Coast's domestic season, the Ligue 1 Côte d'Ivoire, is played in conditions the Institute classifies as tropically humid for the greater part of the calendar year; Ecuador's top flight alternates between the cool highland air of Quito and the considerably warmer coastal grounds of Guayaquil. The Institute assigns the coefficient a slight lean toward the side with year-round, rather than seasonal, acquaintance with heat.

Ivory Coast's home shirt presents a vivid orange field overlaid with an all-over leopard-print pattern, with green underarm panels and collar drawn from the national flag, and the Fédération Ivoirienne de Football crest set at the chest in green and white. The Institute's spectral desk reports that the leopard print's irregular, non-repeating geometry produces no measurable interaction with Lincoln Financial Field's linearly mown surface in either direction — the pattern is, in the desk's words, "already camouflage, applied to a surface it was never designed to match." Ecuador's home shirt presents the federation's traditional yellow field, with a navy round collar and navy cuffs trimmed in red, drawn from the national flag's three-band design. Yellow against Lincoln Financial Field's pale bluegrass produces what the Institute terms field saturation — a condition, distinct from grain dissonance, in which a kit's base colour approaches the surface's own colour under stadium lighting closely enough to reduce a marking defender's reaction time by a measurable margin. The Institute assigns a field saturation coefficient of 1.08.

Section Three — Stadium Conditions Matrix
Lincoln Financial Field sits at approximately 12 metres above sea level, comfortably beneath the Institute's 1,500-metre threshold; no adaptive physiology weighting applies to either squad. The altitude column is closed for the seventh consecutive report, a streak the Institute's clerk now records without comment of any kind.
The stadium is open to the sky, with a capacity of 69,796, and the Institute's meteorological desk reiterates the heat and humidity noted in Section One: ambient conditions at kickoff are projected to test both squads' late-match conditioning. The Institute's archive records that several Ecuadorian players are based at altitude in Quito, where reduced oxygen density is understood to confer a cardiovascular conditioning benefit at sea level — a transfer effect the Institute's physiology desk has previously observed, though never under simultaneous heat stress of this magnitude. The desk assigns a thermal load coefficient of 1.05, weighted to Ivory Coast, on the basis that heat tolerance, unlike altitude conditioning, does not require a return flight to acquire.

Section Four — Historical Precedent Layer
The Institute's archive records zero prior meetings between Ivory Coast and Ecuador at any level, in any competition, on any surface. This is the second instance in nine reports in which the Historical Precedent Layer has returned an empty record, the first having been Report 005. The standard null coefficient of 1.00 applies to both sides equally, and the Institute notes, as it did in Report 005, that a coefficient of total certainty and a coefficient of total ignorance remain numerically identical, and that the reader is again asked not to dwell on this.
The Institute observes, for completeness, that this is Ivory Coast's fourth World Cup appearance and Ecuador's fourth as well — a numerical symmetry the archive flags but does not weight, on the grounds that matching attendance records do not constitute precedent between the two parties involved.

Section Five — National Symbolism Weighting
Ivory Coast's crest presents the head of an elephant in profile, in gold, above three stars commemorating the nation's continental titles, on a shield of green and white. The Institute's heraldry desk confirms the elephant as the largest land animal eligible for assessment under its symbolism framework, but notes that the standard 1.15× predator coefficient applies strictly to predatory fauna, and an elephant, however formidable, is a herbivore. The desk assigns instead a separate mass coefficient of 1.11, recognising the elephant as the heaviest animal yet to appear on a crest in this competition, on the grounds that an animal's capacity to intimidate need not depend on its diet.
Ecuador's crest presents an Andean condor perched atop a shield bearing a steamship beneath a sun and the signs of the zodiac, with a laurel and palm wreath below. The Institute's ornithology sub-desk confirms the Andean condor as a carrion-feeder rather than an active predator, and therefore ineligible for the 1.15× predator coefficient on the same technicality applied to Ivory Coast's elephant. The condor is, however, the heaviest flying bird in the Western Hemisphere, and the desk assigns it a mass coefficient of 1.04 — lower than the elephant's, the desk notes, "on the grounds that flight remains, on balance, an advantage."
National Symbolism verdict: Ivory Coast advantage. Elephant mass coefficient of 1.11 against the condor's 1.04, neither qualifying for the standard predator weighting.
The Institute's multi-parameter analysis returns a directional signal in favour of Ivory Coast across three of the five measured variables, with the Historical Precedent Layer returning, for the second time in this competition, a wholly empty record and a corresponding neutral verdict. The thermal load coefficient of 1.05 and the elephant's mass coefficient of 1.11 are assessed as the dominant terms, compounding to outweigh Ecuador's field-saturation advantage in Section Two.
Ecuador's field-saturated kit and the cardiovascular transfer effect of altitude conditioning are acknowledged as genuine factors, and the Institute credits the desk's assessment that they remain sufficient to register on the scoreline, if not to alter its direction. The Institute notes that this is the fourth World Cup appearance for each nation, a symmetry it finds pleasing and, as recorded above, irrelevant.
