Netherlands vs Japan

The GrassRank Institute has completed its analysis of the eleventh fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the opening Group F encounter between the Netherlands and Japan, staged beneath the retractable roof of AT&T Stadium. The Institute notes that this is the third meeting between these nations at senior level and the second at a FIFA World Cup, a recurrence the Historical Precedent desk addresses at length in Section Four.

AT&T Stadium's tournament surface is a natural grass system grown over the stadium's existing Hellas Matrix base and matured under the controlled conditions afforded by the world's largest retractable roof assembly. The Institute regards a pitch raised indoors, on a schedule, to a specification, as a pitch that has been told exactly what it is for — and proceeds accordingly.

Section One — Turf Composition Index

The AT&T Stadium surface, grown under glass and steel rather than open sky, presents a moisture retention coefficient the Institute assesses at 0.91 — a controlled, slightly dry reading consistent with a pitch matured under climate-managed conditions rather than seasonal rainfall. The Institute's agronomy desk notes that the Eredivisie, the Netherlands' domestic competition, is played overwhelmingly on tightly mown, fast-draining surfaces maintained to a comparable specification, while Japan's J.League grounds vary considerably between hybrid hot-season surfaces in Kyushu and cooler, slower pitches in Hokkaido. The Institute assigns the coefficient a lean toward the side whose domestic football most closely resembles the surface it is about to play on.

The desk notes, without elaboration, that a wave pattern designed to evoke a horizon does not appear to recognise one when it is mown into grass.

Section Three — Stadium Conditions Matrix

AT&T Stadium sits at an elevation of approximately 180 metres above sea level, comfortably beneath the Institute's 1,500-metre threshold; no adaptive physiology weighting applies to either squad. The altitude column remains closed.

The stadium's roof will be closed for the fixture, and the Institute's meteorological desk applies its standard controlled atmosphere coefficient of 1.04, as at every previous closed-roof fixture in this competition. The desk notes that a controlled atmosphere removes wind, rain, and the late-afternoon glare that has featured in several outdoor reports, and assigns the coefficient a lean toward the side the desk judges better equipped to exploit a contest reduced to its essentials — a judgement it bases on the Netherlands' substantially larger margin of victory across the two nations' previous meetings, detailed in Section Four.

Stadium Conditions verdict: Netherlands advantage. Altitude neutral; controlled atmosphere coefficient of 1.04 favours the side with the stronger record once external variables are removed.

Section Four — Historical Precedent Layer

The Institute's archive records three prior meetings between the Netherlands and Japan, all at senior level: a September 2009 friendly won by the Netherlands, a goal from Wesley Sneijder settling their 2010 FIFA World Cup group match in Durban, and a 2013 friendly that ended level. The aggregate score across all three meetings stands at 6–2 in the Netherlands' favour, with Japan yet to record a win against Dutch opposition at any level.

The 2010 meeting carries particular weight under the Institute's framework: a prior encounter at the World Cup stage between the same two nations receives the standard 3.2× weighting, applied here in full. The Institute notes that the 2010 fixture was also decided by a single goal in the Netherlands' favour — the same margin, the desk observes, "by which a record can be extended without being run up," a distinction it declines to weight separately.

Section Five — National Symbolism Weighting

The Netherlands' crest presents a stylised lion, rampant, in gold on a blue shield beneath the letters "KNVB" — a design drawn from the Dutch royal coat of arms. The Institute's heraldry desk confirms the lion as eligible in full for the standard 1.15× apex predator coefficient, the eighth such crest to qualify in this competition and the first since Report 005 to do so without qualification, addendum, or footnote.

Japan's crest centres on the Yatagarasu, a three-legged crow of Shinto mythology said to have guided the first emperor through the wilderness, rendered in gold within the JFA's circular badge. The Institute's ornithology sub-desk confirms the crow as a corvid — an opportunistic omnivore rather than an active predator — and therefore ineligible for the 1.15× coefficient on the now-familiar dietary technicality. The desk assigns instead a guidance coefficient of 1.09, in recognition of the Yatagarasu's mythological function as a guide rather than a hunter, noting that a bird whose principal historical achievement is showing someone else the way receives credit for direction but not for force.

The Institute's multi-parameter analysis returns a directional signal in favour of the Netherlands across all five measured variables — the first unanimous reading recorded in this competition. The World Cup-stage precedent weighting of 3.2× is assessed as the dominant term, reinforced by the lion's apex predator coefficient of 1.15× and the visibility coefficient of 1.12× afforded by the tournament's most saturated orange kit.

Japan's guidance coefficient of 1.09× falls short of the 1.10 threshold the Institute requires before crediting a losing side's strongest term against the run of play, and the desk records no compensating goal on that basis. The Institute notes that a unanimous five-variable reading has not previously occurred in this competition, and that the controlled atmosphere coefficient of 1.04× — ordinarily a minor term — closes the total to a figure the desk regards as proportionate rather than emphatic.
