France vs Morocco

The GrassRank Institute has completed its analysis of Match 97 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. France arrive perfect — five matches, five wins, fourteen goals scored and two conceded — having won Group I outright before dispatching Sweden 3–0 and grinding past Paraguay 1–0 in the Round of 16. Morocco arrive unbeaten across five games, the first African nation ever to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals, having drawn with the Netherlands and then dismissed Canada 3–0 to reach the last eight. The Institute treats both trajectories as data. It notes that one side has processed its opponents and the other has outlasted its own.

The two federations have met only twice in the recorded history: a 2–2 friendly in 2007, and the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup, which France won 2–0 on the way to the final. Morocco has never beaten France. That 2022 result — Theo Hernandez inside five minutes, Randal Kolo Muani late, Kylian Mbappé involved in both — remains the only World Cup-stage meeting on file, and tonight is its rematch.

Section One — Turf Composition Index

Gillette Stadium — filed for the tournament simply as Boston — has had its usual artificial surface torn out and replaced with natural grass grown specifically for the World Cup. The relaid pitch returns a moisture retention coefficient of 0.97, comfortably clear of the Institute’s 0.95 threshold: a fast, true surface. Open to the New England air, with no roof to trap humidity, it behaves as a quick passing surface rewards the side that keeps the ball on the floor.

That reading favours France’s game marginally. The Institute records it as such — a small advantage, and, on its own, an insufficient one.

Turf Composition verdict: France — Marginal Surface Reading, Insufficient. Moisture retention coefficient 0.97, above threshold; a fast, true pitch that rewards the passing side. The finding favours France narrowly and does not stand alone.

Section Two — Kit Chromatography Profile

France wear plain navy — a flat, low-complexity chromatographic reading. Morocco wear deep red, cut through with a green pentagram and its geometric line-work, returning a chromatic-aggression coefficient of 1.12. Neither kit is yellow: the 1.40× visibility coefficient is not engaged for either side. The lone directional reading here is Morocco’s, and it is slim.

Kit Chromatography verdict: Morocco — Slim Chromatic Finding, 1.12. Neither kit clears the yellow-ground threshold; Morocco’s red-and-pentagram reads marginally more aggressive than France’s flat navy.

Section Three — Stadium Conditions Matrix

Gillette Stadium sits at approximately twenty-eight metres above sea level — well below the Institute’s 1,500-metre adaptive physiology threshold. No cardiovascular differential is recorded on altitude grounds. The stadium is open-air, with no roof to close: the Total Goal Dampener is not engaged on structural grounds, and the cool Atlantic evening introduces no extreme variable. Neutral ground.

Stadium Conditions verdict: No Directional Finding — Sea-Level, Open Air. Adaptive physiology threshold not engaged at twenty-eight metres; no roof, and so no Total Goal Dampener. The venue favours neither side.

Section Four — Historical Precedent Layer

Two prior meetings exist, and Morocco has won neither: a 2–2 draw in 2007 and a 2–0 France win at the 2022 World Cup semi-final. That 2022 result is the only World Cup-stage meeting on file, and it carries the Institute’s full 3.2× weighting. Across both fixtures France has scored four, Morocco two, and the ledger records one French win, one draw, and no Moroccan victory.

Two meetings, zero Moroccan wins, and the one that mattered most weighted heavily. The precedent closes in one direction.

Historical Precedent verdict: France — Precedent Confirmed, Weighted 3.2×. The head-to-head record, and the tournament’s only prior meeting, both favour France.

Section Five — National Symbolism Weighting

France competes as Les Bleus, under the Gallic Rooster — a bird of considerable noise and no apex-predator classification by the Institute’s standard zoological protocol. Morocco competes as the Atlas Lions — a confirmed, extant apex predator. The 1.15× coefficient engages in full, and it engages for Morocco.

National Symbolism verdict: Morocco — Apex Predator 1.15×. The section’s sole directional finding, and it accrues to Morocco. The Lion outranks the Rooster on symbolism alone.

Section Six — Group Stage Momentum Index

France won Group I outright on a perfect nine points, scoring freely across three matches and conceding little — a campaign that never once dropped below control. Morocco advanced from Group C behind Brazil, unbeaten but on two draws and a win, surviving a harder group without ever imposing themselves on it. The momentum differential reads plus 1.40 in France’s favour.

Both sides survived their groups. The manner of it was not equal.

Group Stage Momentum verdict: France — Momentum Edge, +1.40. Group winners on a perfect record against an unbeaten but less commanding passage.

Section Seven — Elimination Readiness Coefficient

France carry the deepest knockout pedigree left in the draw: eighteen wins from their last twenty-one World Cup knockout matches, a 2022 final and a 2018 title behind them, and an elimination-readiness coefficient of 0.88 — the highest the Institute records among the surviving eight. Morocco carry genuine recent knockout composure — a 2022 semi-final run and back-to-back quarter-finals — but the ledger of proven, repeated knockout results still favours France.

Elimination Readiness verdict: France — Elimination Readiness Certified, 0.88. The deepest and most decorated knockout pedigree in the draw favours France. This report is reviewed by the Institute’s standing Panel of Three. It is published without reservation.

France 2 – Morocco 1
Composite confidence: 77.4% · France hold the directional findings in Historical Precedent Layer (the tournament’s only World Cup-stage meeting, weighted 3.2×), Group Stage Momentum (group winners on a perfect record, +1.40 differential), Elimination Readiness (0.88, the deepest knockout pedigree in the draw), and a marginal Turf Composition reading (0.97, above threshold) · Morocco hold National Symbolism Weighting (the Atlas Lions, certified apex predator, 1.15×) and a slim Kit Chromatography edge (1.12) · Gillette Stadium is open-air at twenty-eight metres — neither the Total Goal Dampener nor adaptive physiology weighting engages · Morocco’s apex-predator finding clears the 1.10 threshold and engages the Consolation Goal Allowance · France advance by two goals to one · By every measure of symbolism the Lion outranks the Rooster; the Institute measured the rest. Certified: the Rooster crows last.
