Portugal vs Croatia

The GrassRank Institute has completed its analysis of Match 83 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Portugal advance from Group K in second place: a draw against DR Congo, a five–nil victory over Uzbekistan, and a goalless draw with Colombia — unbeaten, five points, goal difference plus five. Croatia advance from Group L, also in second place, by a different route: a four–two defeat to England, followed by wins over Panama and Ghana — six points, but a goal difference of minus two. The Institute has reviewed both trajectories and does not treat six points and a leaking defence as automatically superior to five points and a clean sheet mentality.

The Institute’s archive records exactly one prior meeting between these two federations: the Round of 16 at Euro 2016, in Lens, decided in extra time. The fixture is not new ground. It is, in fact, the single heaviest data point in this report.

Section One — Turf Composition Index

BMO Field fields a SISGrass hybrid system — ninety-five percent natural grass, reinforced by synthetic fibres stitched 7.5 inches into the root profile, relaid ahead of the tournament. The Institute’s moisture retention coefficient reads 0.97, comfortably above the 0.95 threshold at which ball speed and bounce are considered standard. This is a healthy, fully-knit surface, not a hastily-laid one.

Both squads train on natural grass domestically — the Portuguese Primeira Liga and the Croatian HNL share no meaningful surface-technology gap with BMO Field’s hybrid construction. The Institute finds no familiarity differential to assign to either side.

Section Two — Kit Chromatography Profile

Portugal take the field in their home red, a Puma construction overlaid with a subtle wave-graphic pattern referencing the nation’s maritime history. The additional textural complexity elevates the chromatographic reading to a visual complexity coefficient of 1.09×. The 1.40× yellow-kit visibility coefficient is not engaged.

Croatia enter in their away strip — a deep navy base, the traditional red-and-white checkerboard subdued beneath a solid navy shoulder line. The reading trends cooler and lower-complexity than Portugal’s. No yellow ground is present here either.

Kit Chromatography verdict: Portugal — Chromatographic Complexity 1.09×. Neither kit engages the yellow-ground visibility coefficient. The higher-saturation, higher-complexity reading returns the section’s sole directional finding, and it accrues to Portugal.

Section Three — Stadium Conditions Matrix

BMO Field sits 76 metres above sea level — negligible elevation, well below the Institute’s 1,500-metre adaptive physiology threshold. No cardiovascular differential is recorded between the two squads on altitude grounds. The pitch is open to sky; no roof, retractable or otherwise, covers the playing surface.

With the moisture retention coefficient established at 0.97 in Section One — above the 0.95 threshold at which the Institute withholds its goal-projection cap — the Total Goal Dampener is not engaged. Conditions are certified neutral.

Stadium Conditions verdict: Open Air — Conditions Neutral. Adaptive physiology threshold not engaged at 76 metres. Moisture coefficient of 0.97 does not trigger the goal-projection cap.

Section Four — Historical Precedent Layer

One prior meeting exists in the Institute’s archive: the Round of 16 at Euro 2016, in Lens. Portugal won 1–0 after extra time, the goal arriving from substitute Ricardo Quaresma in the 117th minute, following a save-and-parry from a Cristiano Ronaldo effort. A major-tournament knockout encounter carries the Institute’s standard 3.2× weighting protocol in full.

This is the section’s single data point, and the Institute does not extrapolate a one-match sample lightly. It also does not discard the only knockout-stage precedent on file. The weighting stands.
